The official reference server for time and timezone capabilities, with two tools: get_current_time (per IANA timezone) and convert_time (between timezones). Small, but it solves a real problem — LLMs have no reliable sense of 'now', and timezone math is a classic hallucination trap. A common utility in almost every serious MCP setup.

What it does

  • Two tools: `get_current_time` (IANA tz) and `convert_time` (source → target tz)
  • Auto-detects system timezone; `--local-timezone` overrides it
  • Python server (`mcp-server-time`), runs via uvx or docker

When to use it

Cheap fix for a real failure mode: models guessing 'what time is it' or fumbling timezone math. Drop it in whenever an agent schedules, compares timestamps, or reasons about deadlines.

Add to .mcp.json under mcpServers.time:

Things to know

Requires MCP Python SDK 1.x (v2 port in progress, per the README banner). That's the entire caveat list — it's the simplest maintained reference server.
