mcp-proxy

Bridge between Streamable HTTP and stdio MCP transports.

MCP Serversproxytransport

A Python CLI that exposes a stdio MCP server backed by a remote SSE/HTTP server — and vice versa — so you can swap transports without rewriting clients.

What it does

  • Transport bridge: exposes a remote SSE/HTTP MCP server to stdio clients, and vice versa
  • Also runs a local stdio server behind HTTP — `mcp-proxy` can front `mcp-server-*` processes
  • Bearer/API token auth via `API_ACCESS_TOKEN` env

When to use it

The glue when your client only speaks stdio but the server is remote (or you want to share a local server over the network).

Getting started

Install via uv (`uv tool install mcp-proxy` or run with `uvx mcp-proxy`), then:

{
  "mcp-proxy": {
    "command": "mcp-proxy",
    "args": ["http://example.io/sse"],
    "env": {
      "API_ACCESS_TOKEN": "access-token"
    }
  }
}

Things to know

A proxy adds a hop — auth and TLS are on you. Don't expose an unauthenticated local server to the network through it.
