Hugging Face's smolagents is a deliberately small agent library (~1k lines of core logic) built around the CodeAgent paradigm: instead of emitting JSON tool calls, the agent writes its actions as Python code that runs in a secure interpreter. Supports Claude and other models via provider integrations. The reference implementation to read when you want to understand agent loops.
