ShellOracle

A terminal utility that turns plain-language descriptions into shell commands via a CTRL+F widget.

Skills & Commandsshellcliterminalllm

ShellOracle is a provider-agnostic terminal utility for shell command generation: press CTRL+F in BASH, ZSH, or fish, describe what you want, and the generated command is inserted into your prompt. It runs against one of eight documented providers — Ollama, llmman, OpenAI, Deepseek, LocalAI, LM Studio, XAI, and Google — so it is not tied to Claude Code; point it at whatever backend you already run.

What it does

  • CTRL+F widget in BASH/ZSH/fish on macOS and Linux: describe the command in plain language and it is inserted into your prompt
  • Command history in the widget — arrow keys cycle through past prompts; text left of the cursor carries over
  • Unix-pipe friendly: echo "find all the python files in my cwd" | shor works without the widget; also runnable as shor or python3 -m shelloracle
  • Eight documented providers — Ollama, llmman, OpenAI, Deepseek, LocalAI, LM Studio, XAI, Google — switched via ~/.shelloracle/config.toml (shor config edit)

When to use it

Recalling flags and composing one-liners without leaving the terminal — for when you know what you want done but not the exact incantation. Because it is provider-agnostic, it fits local-model setups (Ollama, LM Studio, LocalAI) as naturally as cloud APIs.

Getting started

# 1. Install the package (pipx preferred for environment isolation)
pipx install shelloracle

# 2. Configure — follow the prompts to pick provider, model, and API key
shor config init

# Usage: press CTRL+F in your shell, describe the command, press Enter

Things to know

Not a Claude Code skill or plugin — the README documents no Claude or Anthropic integration, and Anthropic is not among the eight documented providers. macOS and Linux only; no native Windows support. GPLv3 licensed.
