The OpenHands repo now ships Agent Canvas (beta): a self-hosted control center that runs the open-source OpenHands agent out of the box and can also drive Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Pi, OpenCode, or any ACP-compatible agent across local, Docker, VM, and cloud backends. Automations connect to Slack, GitHub, and Linear on schedules or webhooks. Lineage: formerly OpenDevin, then the OpenHands agent platform.

What it does

  • Runs the open-source OpenHands agent out of the box, and drives Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Pi, OpenCode, or any agent speaking Agent-Client Protocol (ACP)
  • Backends are swappable without changing the frontend: local, Docker, VMs, company infrastructure, or OpenHands Cloud / Enterprise
  • Automations and workflows integrate Slack, GitHub, Linear, Notion and more — triggered on a schedule or by webhook events
  • Bring your own model via LLM profiles; agents on a server keep running when your laptop shuts

When to use it

Turning a pool of coding agents into an always-on engineering team: scheduled report runs that post to Slack, automatic GitHub issue triage, or a shared agent server your team uses for code review and dependency updates while personal agents stay on your laptop.

Getting started

Prerequisites: Node.js 24 or later and uv. Without a sandbox (the agent gets full filesystem access — see caveats):

npm install -g @openhands/agent-canvas
agent-canvas

Split the stack when needed with agent-canvas --frontend-only or --backend-only; a Docker-sandboxed variant is documented in the README.

Things to know

Sandboxing is the safety decision that matters: the README warns that the no-sandbox option runs the agent-server directly on your machine with full filesystem access, and points server deployments at SELF_HOSTING.md for security hardening. The project badges itself beta — expect interface and backend churn.
