Memory MCP Server

Official reference MCP server for a persistent knowledge graph.

MCP Serversofficialmemoryknowledge-graphreference

Stores entities, relations, and observations in a knowledge graph that persists across conversations, giving Claude long-term memory.

What it does

  • Persistent knowledge graph across chats: entities, relations, observations
  • Nine tools: create/add/delete entities, relations, observations + read_graph/search_nodes/open_nodes
  • npm package `@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory`; MEMORY_FILE_PATH env picks the storage JSONL

When to use it

When you want Claude to remember user preferences, project facts, or decisions between sessions. The README includes a ready-made 'Remembering...' system-prompt pattern for chat personalization.

Getting started

Add to .mcp.json under mcpServers.memory:

{
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-memory"]
}

Optional env: MEMORY_FILE_PATH=/path/to/memory.jsonl (default: memory.jsonl next to the server).

Things to know

Memory is a flat JSONL file on local disk — no sync, no sharing across machines, and no access control beyond filesystem permissions. It is a reference implementation: fine for personal use, not a production memory service.
