MCP Go SDK (official)

Official Go SDK for MCP — built with Google as a reference implementation partner.

SDKs & Toolingofficialsdkgomcp

modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk is the canonical Go SDK for MCP servers and clients, jointly developed with Google. Coexists with the community mcp-go (mark3labs) — use this for greenfield projects.

What it does

  • Official MCP Go SDK (modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk), under the modelcontextprotocol org
  • Package `mcp` provides client + server APIs; stdio and Streamable HTTP transports
  • Minimal, spec-tracking design — `mcp.NewServer` + `mcp.AddTool` + `server.Run`

When to use it

The reference choice for a Go MCP server when you want spec fidelity and long-term maintenance guarantees.

Getting started

go get github.com/modelcontextprotocol/go-sdk/mcp

Server skeleton:

server := mcp.NewServer(&mcp.Implementation{Name: "greeter", Version: "v1.0.0"}, nil)
mcp.AddTool(server, &mcp.Tool{Name: "greet"}, SayHi)
server.Run(context.Background(), &mcp.StdioTransport{})

Things to know

Lower-level than mark3labs/mcp-go — less sugar, closer to the spec. Compare both before committing.
