Kubernetes MCP Server

Official Containers project MCP server for kubectl-grade operations against any k8s cluster.

MCP Serversofficialkubernetesk8scontainersdevops

The Containers community's MCP server for Kubernetes — exposes kubectl-grade operations (get/describe/apply/logs/exec) as MCP tools, with proper RBAC and namespace scoping. The de-facto entry point for letting Claude operate against a real k8s cluster safely.

What it does

  • Native Go implementation talking to the K8s API directly — NOT a kubectl wrapper; no external deps
  • Generic CRUD on any resource + pods (logs, exec, top, run), namespaces, events, Helm, Tekton, OpenShift projects
  • npx kubernetes-mcp-server@latest, uvx, native binary, or container; multi-cluster via kubeconfig

When to use it

The maintained, batteries-included Kubernetes MCP: let an agent inspect pods, read logs, diagnose deployments — with auto-reload when kubeconfig changes. Good for ops-copilot workflows.

Getting started

Needs access to a cluster (kubeconfig). Claude Desktop:

{
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "kubernetes-mcp-server@latest"]
}

For production, create a dedicated read-only ServiceAccount per the docs/getting-started-kubernetes.md guide.

Things to know

It inherits your kubeconfig's permissions — with an admin kubeconfig the agent can delete pods and uninstall Helm releases. Use a dedicated read-only ServiceAccount for anything beyond local clusters (kind/minikube).
