GitLab MCP Server

Reference MCP server for GitLab projects and merge requests.

MCP Serversofficialgitlabreferencearchived

Reference MCP server for GitLab projects, issues, merge requests, and pipelines. Lets Claude read and write GitLab resources through the GitLab REST API. Originally a modelcontextprotocol reference; archived upstream.

What it does

  • GitLab project ops: file CRUD (auto-branching), push_files, search, create repo/issue/MR, fork, create_branch
  • npx `@modelcontextprotocol/server-gitlab` + GITLAB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN env
  • GITLAB_API_URL points it at self-hosted instances (default gitlab.com/api/v4)

When to use it

The GitLab twin of the GitHub MCP server: file edits, issues, merge requests from inside Claude. The auto-branch-on-write behavior is the nice touch — edits never land directly on your default branch.

Getting started

Create a GitLab PAT (api scope for full access; read_api + read_repository/write_repository for narrower), then:

{
  "command": "npx",
  "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-gitlab"],
  "env": { "GITLAB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN": "glpat-...", "GITLAB_API_URL": "https://gitlab.com/api/v4" }
}

Things to know

Archived upstream; for active GitLab work check the newer gitlab-org maintained server before committing. Token in env = plaintext secret in your config file — prefer a read-scoped token for read-heavy use.
