An open-source VS Code extension that runs an autonomous coding agent capable of editing files, running terminals, and using MCP tools.

What it does

  • Autonomous coding agent that lives inside VS Code (also JetBrains plugin and a standalone CLI)
  • Creates/edits files, runs terminal commands and uses the browser — each step needs your approval
  • MCP support lets you plug in external tools and data sources
  • Also ships a CLI (npm i -g cline) and an SDK (@cline/sdk) for headless/CI use

When to use it

For VS Code users who want an agentic loop without leaving the editor: plan mode for architecture, act mode for execution, with granular approvals on every command. The CLI makes it usable in terminals and automation too.

Getting started

Install the Cline extension from the VS Code Marketplace (search 'Cline'), or the JetBrains plugin from its marketplace. Headless use:

npm i -g cline

Things to know

Bring your own model API key (Claude, OpenAI-compatible, etc.); long agent runs burn tokens fast, so watch spend on big tasks.
