Claude Mem (thedotmack, 90k+ stars) is a persistent memory compression system built for Claude Code: it hooks into sessions to capture what happened, compresses it, and makes it retrievable in later sessions — so context survives across restarts and across projects. The community-standard answer to 'Claude Code forgets everything between sessions'.

What it does

  • Automatic capture through six lifecycle hooks (SessionStart through SessionEnd); observations and semantic summaries land in SQLite with FTS5, and Chroma adds hybrid semantic + keyword search
  • Layered token-efficient search: search returns a compact index (~50-100 tokens/result), timeline adds chronological context, get_observations fetches full details only for filtered IDs
  • Multi-harness: one installer covers Claude Code, OpenCode (1.3.4+), T3 Code, Antigravity, Pi, DeepSeek Harness and more, with a built-in Simplified Chinese mode (code--zh)
  • Worker service with a local HTTP API and web viewer UI, a mem-search skill, and a Claude Desktop skill for querying memory outside the terminal

When to use it

The default fix for "Claude Code forgets everything between sessions": hand it a project you return to daily and context — decisions, bugfixes, past investigations — is back in the next session without manual note-keeping. Also works across harnesses: with include-all-sources enabled, memory captured in Claude Code can surface in OpenCode or Codex-provider sessions.

Getting started

npx claude-mem install (restart Claude Code after). Marketplace route inside Claude Code:

Things to know

Do not install with npm install -g claude-mem — the README is explicit that this ships the SDK/library only and registers no hooks; use npx claude-mem install or the /plugin commands. The installer ends in a browser sign-in that provisions the hosted claude-mem observer (30-day free trial); skip it with an explicit --provider flag, CLAUDE_MEM_ONLINE_OPTIN=false, or by running in CI. When the trial ends, memory falls back to your Anthropic plan unless you subscribe; your own OpenRouter or Gemini key also works as provider. Requirements: Node 20+, Bun and uv (auto-installed). Unrelated but worth knowing: the README officially embraces a third-party CMEM crypto token.
