The Breakthrough Method for Agile AI-Driven Development (BMAD) is the most-starred methodology repo in the AI coding space. It structures development as a virtual agent team — analyst, PM, architect, scrum master, dev, QA — where planning agents produce sharded, context-rich story documents that dev agents implement. Two phases: agentic planning in a web UI, then agentic development in Claude Code.

What it does

  • Agent roles with expanding context: Analyst → PM → Architect → SM each refine the planning docs
  • Stories carry full context (architecture decisions, acceptance criteria) so dev agents start warm
  • QA agent validates against the story rather than vibes
  • Installable expansion packs cover domains beyond software

When to use it

Greenfield feature development where you want the AI planning phase separated from implementation — the planning agents work in a web UI (cheap, big context), the dev agents work in Claude Code. Heavier than Spec Kit; worth it when the planning phase genuinely needs PM/architect roles.

Getting started

npx bmad-method install

Installs agents, workflows, and templates into your project; then run the planning cycle in a web UI and the dev cycle with Claude Code.

Things to know

An opinionated agile methodology, not a drop-in tool — teams not doing story-driven development will fight it. Docs have a learning curve; budget time to understand the roles before rolling it out.
